The good news, your auto insurance premiums will decrease in 2007. The bad news, they’re only dropping an estimated .05 percent. That extra four bucks a year may not even buy one value meal, but it’s a positive trend in an industry known for steady price increases. Nationwide, this measly four dollars translates into hundreds of millions in total consumer savings.

The Insurance Information Institute (III) attributes the rate reduction to several factors–a more competitive marketplace, safer cars and drivers, some inventive fraud-fighting tactics and more accurate underwriting.

To those of you who have bemoaned credit-based insurance scoring, it is one of the reasons we’re seeing the price of auto insurance drop. Using credit to determine the price an individual will pay for insurance has its pitfalls, but overall has given insurers a more precise way to determine premiums.

So keep a clean credit history. Pay credit card balances completely, pay bills on time and don’t open too many cards or accounts at once. Credit-based scoring is here to stay, so work within the system to raise your score.

Although it’s only .05 percent, some tweaks to your coverage could reduce the cost further. III recommends raising your deductibles and reducing your coverage. It sounds a bit counterintuitive coming from an insurance resource. However, if you can cover your losses in the event of an accident without sacrificing your financial well-being, raising deductibles and reducing coverage can shrink your premium price between 15 and 20 percent.

For more information about ways to save on auto insurance, check out our resource center or III.

Not all Auto insurance policies are the same even though people would like to think they are. Here is an example of one difference.

You buy a newer car from a local used car dealer with 20,000 miles on it. You drive your car to work and park it in the lot. Soon after, you get a call from security that there is smoke rolling out from under the hood. The fire department has already been called and they arrive at the same time you do. You pop open the hood and they find that there is only smoke coming from the wiring harness. It looks like a toaster wire in places. (It will do this if a short occurs and the current from the battery will cause this to happen) The fire department empties a couple of extinguishers on the smoke until it quits and they leave. You grab the warranty information from the glove box and call the auto manufacturer. You find out that the warranty on that part of the vehicle is only for 10,000 miles.

You call your insurance agent and report the claim. He/she sends an adjustor to look at your car. The adjustor also notes that there had been no flames, just smoke from the short. He denies the claim and you argue over the fact that your policy states that there is coverage again a loss by fire. He takes the policy out and points out the definition stated in the policy excludes any damage that is not caused by flames. At this point you are looking to take it up with any one who will listen.

You go back to the used car lot that sold the car to see what they warrant. They do not cover any thing other than engine and drive train.

You finally realize, you are stuck for the 1500 repair bill. Is this what you would expect. Would you not have expected your insurance company to pay this bill, after all it was certainly caused by a very hot wires. The fact of the matter is as was pointed out, it depends on how the policy defines fire. If it defines it a certain way it can exclude damage caused by something that is hot enough to melt the insulation off of wires, but not hot enough to break into flames. I have to admit when I heard about this I was taken back.

This is just one example of how definitions affect the coverages in your policy. So the question then comes up, what can you do to prevent this type of thing from happening to you?

Strangely enough, it is the consumer’s responsibility to find out about the coverages. Most people think it is up to the agent to make them aware of the lack of coverage, the fact is, that they only have to answer truthfully any questions you may ask them and they are not obligated to tell you all they know. If your agent tells you, you have coverage on something and it is found out later that the policy does not cover that loss, the insured will surely bring the agent’s E&O coverage into play. To prevent that from happening, a sharp agent, will get the answer from an underwriter or officer of the company explaining how the policy interprets a loss.

Every insurance company has precedent on how they have handled previous claims of the type you are dealing with, you need to know what they did on past claims. If your claim is unique enough so there is no precedents it will now depend on how that section of your policy is defined. That always leaves room for speculation. If they say they will not speculate on how losses will be handled, then I would not speculate on buying the coverage from them. As was stated, it is your responsibility to ask, and your agent and company to answer truthfully any question asked them. Now, how do you know which questions to ask?

There is additional information on a web site at www.autoinsurance.wpds1.com.

So in conclusion, you must ask yourself this question. Do you want cheap insurance, or do you want quality insurance? The two will probably not be the same, but how will you know?

Added comment.

If you have an unusual insurance experience, the author would interested in hearing about it. Just give as many of the claim and the outcome about the claim as you feel are pertinent to the case and I may include it in my next book. If you are willing to mention the name of the company and refer to the case number, all of the available facts will be addressed if your claim is chosen to be included. I will not mention your name in the article unless you give me specific authorization to do so. You may contact me at the email mentioned on the web site.

In the UK, it is a legal requirement that any active motorist with a car on the road has to have motor car insurance. There is no alternative purely and simply because it is a criminal offence to drive on a public road without basic rudimentary motor car insurance, and it is actually your car that is insured and not you. Even if your car were insured, you would still be prosecuted if you happened to be driving a friend’s car that was not. The law is very specific on this matter and so it is extremely important to make sure that you know your motor car insurance stuff!

There are numerous policies on the market that can do the job for you and ensure that you are not breaking the law. The Road Traffic Act actually states that you need to be insured against any liability for damage to public or private property and also any injuries that are inflicted on other individuals as a direct result of a car accident. The law is in effect there to protect you as a result. If you did not have motor car insurance then the likelihood is that another individual may sue you for damages if you did not have insurance to cover expenses.

However, this motor car insurance law actually works against those drivers that obey the law as a direct result of the irresponsibility of those that do not. One in every twenty drivers do not have motor car insurance when they are on the road, and the accidents that they are involved in causes a loss of revenue for insurance companies. As a result, our insurance premiums go up.

It is therefore essential that any individual find the best motor car insurance for him or her. Some policies actually insure against being hit by an uninsured driver, but price is always an issue! There is a specialist website available that can help you to find the best deal for you though, and this would save you time and energy, as well as looking after your best interests in the long run!

When choosing your car insurance, bear in mind that there are a number of providers out there. Sometimes it can seem that you are just looking at a sea of information and it is impossible to work out how to get the best deal. But following just a few of the following car insurance tips will enable you to get the most out of the experience, and, hopefully, walk away with a car insurance policy that you can call a bargain.

First of all, get a smaller car.

This will pay off in the long run, and not just in the cost of premiums. You will find that fuel costs less, and the overall running cost of the car will be reduced. Then the premiums will be lower. Your insurer will take into account the size of your car’s engine when insuring you. It is definitely worth considering as an option when you are thinking of ways to reduce the cost of premiums.

Make sure that you can report to your insurer when they are asking the initial questions that you keep it in a secure area. An off the road garage is ideal; this can often help keep your premiums low. If you can’t say that you are using your own garage, and if there is an opportunity to rent or use someone else’s garage, then do this. It can often have an impact on the overall cost of your policy.

Be a careful driver. This may seem a like a completely obvious piece of advice, but when you are driving around on the road in a safe manner, insurance companies will ensure that your premiums are lower. Speeding fines and points on the driving licence will attract higher premiums from an insurer as you will be deemed more likely to make a claim on your insurance.

If you are learning to drive consider taking the Pass Plus Test. For this little extra financial outlay at the start of your driving career, you can sometimes see a discount on your premiums. Insurers can sometimes offer a discount if you have passed your Pass Plus test.

When completing your insurance application, make sure that all of your questions on the policy documentation are answered accurately. Whatever you do don’t guess your annual mileage, for example. Insurers need to know how many miles you drive in a year so that they can offer an accurate premium.

Lastly, volunteer some of the excess. If you can do this, you will see a subsequent drop in the cost of premiums as you are taking on some of the risk from the insurer.

Whether it is third party (which covers only the person or car you cause damage to), third party fire and theft (which covers the other driver and the two eventualities), or fully comprehensive cover, use these car insurance tips, and make sure that you think about how you can present the best case to the insurer. It will pay off in the long run.

As with buying other products and services for your car, you can save yourself a good deal of money with online auto insurance. While there are still many ways to buy insurance in person today, the advantages of doing it online greatly outweigh the negatives, if there are any.

Buying on the web is:

• Simple – you can gather all your own information and enter it yourself
• Easy Access – you can do it from home, at 2 am, in your pajamas
• Economical – because you no longer need an insurance agent, costs are cut and passed on to you

It also makes it very easy to compare prices between several different online auto insurance companies, and to find special discounts that may not be mentioned by agents.

There are a few circumstances that make it a better idea to use an agent than online auto insurance. For instance, if you own a street rod or specialized and valuable car, you should talk to an agent to ensure you are covering all your bases. If you own a company fleet of vehicles that all need to be insured, or if you run a delivery company, you should also buy from an agent rather than online.

However, for almost all purchasers of insurance, online car insurance is the way to go.

How To Buy Auto Insurance Online

To save yourself time, have all your car information together before you go shopping for online car insurance: your VIN; the make, model, and year of your car; the license numbers and birth dates of all drivers in your household; and records of previous accidents and traffic violations within at least the last three years.

Give yourself some time to work on the policy. You’ll be filling in a lot of information and answering a lot of questions, so don’t do this at work. Many online auto insurance companies advertise that it takes no more than fifteen minutes to get your policy; count on a half hour or more instead. And make sure you have a printer hooked up and ready to go, so that when you finish your policy and it’s approved you can print the documents and cards out right away.

Don’t offer information that the insurance company doesn’t ask for. Most online auto insurance companies ask for information about traffic violations and accidents you’ve had within the last three years; if you had an accident three years and a month ago, don’t mention it. Also, if your accident did not go on the police record for some reason (for instance, you had an accident in a parking lot that you took care of yourself), don’t mention it. One accident, even if it’s not your fault, can double your premiums. Auto insurance, online or offline, is in the business to make money; it’s your job to ensure you keep as much of your money as possible.

Finally, update your auto insurance information at least annually, and shop around for online car insurance with other companies to see if you can get a better deal elsewhere. The insurance industry is volatile, and you’re likely to see changes every year that may benefit you. Just because you find a better deal with another company doesn’t mean you need to change your insurance company to save money; call them and tell them about the other company’s deal to see if they offer to match it first.

Insurance can be termed as one of the biggest help for people in today’s world. It is not difficult to understand why. Life these days have become extremely expensive. So much so that any sudden expense can completely disrupt the smooth functioning of any middle class household. And if the expenditure has risen out of damage to some expensive item, then the situation becomes really serious. On most occasions, expensive items are purchased on loans implying that not only has one got to spend for the repayment of loan, but also fix up the damage.

The situation becomes worse if the concerned item happens to be a car, because then it is almost guaranteed that the expense would be immense. It is here that the insurance companies step in and prove their relevance. Their biggest help is the fact that they bear all the expenses and exempt the concerned person from paying a single penny. It is for this reason that insurance, particularly cheap car insurance is gaining huge popularity in the UK. Imagine a scenario when your car is stolen or has faced some accident with dents all over its body, and you don’t have to pay a single penny on its repairing. This is exactly what a cheap car insurance does and is the reason why it is so popular in UK.

However, to gain maximum advantage from cheap car insurance, one should take extreme precaution while opting for it. Firstly, he should check whether the insurance company whose policy he is buying is giving him the best deal. In other words, he should do a thorough research about the offer of different insurance companies before committing to one. He should check whether his good is priced correctly. No false information should ever be furnished to the insurance company, as it can lead to unnecessary hassles.

If the above mentioned precautions are taken, then there is no reason why a Cheap Car Insurance will not prove to be beneficial to its customers.

The biggest mistake drivers make when buying car insurance is just calling the first company that comes to mind, which is probably the one they last saw on television. You are sure to end up paying way too much for insurance if you do this.

Here is a flawless way to get the cheapest insurance without sacrificing good coverage.

Step 1 – Compose a List of 10 Car Insurance Companies

Start with the top nationwide companies like All-State, Geico and Esurance. Then, finish off the list with some local companies. It’s important to inquire from several companies for two reasons. First, you’ll find that the rates are quite different, in some cases one company may be 100s less than the others. The second reason building a list is good is that later on when you are talking to agents and getting quotes, they’ll quickly see that you are shopping around and therefore may offer an even lower rate right on the spot.

Step 2- Get Quotes

Get online quotes from all the companies that offer this service. Be sure you keep track of the kind of coverage you are getting a quote for. Don’t make the mistake of believing one company is cheaper than the other when in fact they are only cheaper because the quote was for less coverage. Then, call all the companies that don’t have online service and see what they will offer you. Make sure that you get every quote in writing. Email should be good enough. You need a paper trail. Finally, put your list in order from the cheapest to most expensive. Now you’re ready for the next step.

Step 3- Bargain

Call the company offering the 2nd cheapest rate. Ask them if they can do better than the cheapest offer you had. If they can, make sure you get the quote in writing. You can stop here if you want and purchase your car insurance. Or, you can rinse and repeat this step to see if any of the other companies are willing to beat lowest quote. When your satisfied that you found that lowest quote then buy your car insurance.

That’s it!! Pat yourself on the back for being a savvy car insurance expert. There are other things you can consider when buying insurance that might get you an even cheaper rate. You can read more at www.car-insurance-hub.com.

Tell me if this has ever happened to you:

You’re cruising down the highway, gabbing with your friend on your cell phone. After you hang up you realize you’ve driven a considerable distance since you’ve been on the phone. But you don’t remember a single thing about the drive since you rang your friend. You can’t recall a single feature of the landscape you have just traversed, yet somehow you’ve managed to stay on road and right of the yellow line. You don’t remember turning left, and then right, but logic says that you did. You can’t remember whether you had to wait at the light or if you sped through. Time and distance have been completely sucked into a black hole. You’ve been in a semi dream state while careening down the road in a huge hunk of metal at sixty miles an hour.

Cars and cell phones scare me. While I am not such a partisan (nor such a hypocrite) as to affix a “Hang up and drive” sticker to my bumper, I can see the logic in legislation that prohibits driving and chatting. And after reading about a recent study in Wired about the affects of the cell phone use on driving ability, I’m on my way to becoming an ardent supporter of such laws.

This is the gist of the study:

Talking on a cell phone impairs your driving ability as much as drinking. Even if you’re using your brand new Blue Tooth hands-free device.

According to the study, carried out by researchers at the University of Utah, motorists with phones drive slower, are more erratic with the gas pedal, and are slower to hit the brakes.

“Driving while talking on a cell phone is as bad as or maybe worse than driving drunk,” said Utah researcher Frank Drews.

<img alt="credit.jpg" src="http://www.insuremeblog.com/insurance/credit.jpg" width="85" height="128"align="right"vspace="5"hspace="5"
Youth has its perks; but cheap auto insurance isn’t one of them. Generally, older, married individuals of the female persuasion snag the best rates. Factors like age, gender and marital status are widely known to affect insurance premiums. But if you’re like most drivers, you’re probably not aware that applying for several credit cards or financing an appliance or jewelry purchase could affect your insurance as well.

Although insurers have been using credit reports to determine insurance rates for over a decade, many consumers–approximately two-thirds of 1,578 people surveyed, according to a 2005 report by the Government Accountability Office–are still unaware of the effect their credit histories could have on their premiums.

Insurance agencies justify credit-based insurance scores by maintaining that there’s a connection between an individual’s money-management skills, or lack thereof, and their insurance risk. The Insurance Information Institute authored an article on the topic, which states, “[Insurance scores] are a measure of how a person manages his or her financial affairs. People who manage their finances well tend to also manage other important aspects of their lives responsibly, such as driving a car.”

Although the reasoning behind credit-based insurance scores is fairly clear, what might help or hurt your score is not. That’s because currently, no consistent scoring formula exists among insurance companies; you may be the epitome of financial responsibility with Progressive’s model, but Farmer might perceive your recent loan inquiries as unstable.

According to Consumer Reports, Fair Isaac’s Assist insurance formula, which several insurers use, relies more on your credit limits, balances and loan inquiries than your payment history to determine your score. The formula Progressive uses evaluates 12 items–things such as opening a credit card in the past four months or having a balance over 40 percent of your maximum will unfavorably affect your score.

Critics of credit-based scoring assert minority and low-income consumers are unfairly impacted. The study “Costly Credit: African Americans and Latinos in Debt,” provides some support, reporting that in 2001, 84 percent of African Americans and 75 percent of Latinos had credit card debt compared to 51 percents of whites. And between 1992 and 2001, the greatest increase of debt hardship fell on white families making less than 15,000–swelling from 19 to 28 percent.

It’s certainly confusing, but not all bad. Insurance scores can decrease your premiums too. You are entitled to a free, annual copy of your credit report from each of the nationwide credit-reporting companies that can help you see what your insurer sees.

So take a look at your credit score before you shop insurance. Meanwhile, check out some tips that could help improve your score, courtesy of Consumer Reports.
